GOLF INSTRUCTION AND GUARANTEES - A TEACHER'S DILEMMA

GOLF INSTRUCTION AND GUARANTEES - A TEACHER'S DILEMMA
LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Whenever I receive an e-mail from a golfer who wants to talk about anything under the sun concerning golf and, in particular, my Over The Top Golf swing, a quick reply is guaranteed. By my own admission, OTG is an unusual method. By deconstructing and re-assembling the golf swing, I've sought to produce scratch golfer-type shots despite having the limited golfing skills typical of an amateur. The simpicity and effectiveness of my swing is amazing. So discussing it with people is fun.

Every so often a letter comes across my desk that prompts me to think even further outside the box. I have often wondered why I haven't sold a billion Over The Top Golf DVDs by now. There are the usual answers, for example, many golfers are perfectly satisfied with their current swings, others prefer traditional golf swing methods like lessons and, more often than I'd like to acknowledge, some folks consider me a crackpot.

In addition to the e-mail itself, after I posted it for discussion with others, I was treated to some very interesting comments, some positive, some not so much - one going as far as calling me a "charlatan." Here is the e-mail.

Was looking at your web site.......as a 30 year over the top golfer (although I very rarely slice...I pull and sometimes pull-hook my driver), I have tried every "traditional" cure I have come across. Before I spend another $25 for your DVD, am I going to get the same drills and is there a guarantee? Thanks. I'm still desperate but no longer willing to throw good money after bad.....What exactly is your DVD going to teach me?

My reply to the writer was that I could not offer a guarantee. Have you received guarantees from pros with whom you've taken golf lessons? Of course not. One person's opinion was that I should offer a guarantee but what, exactly would I be guaranteeing? A lower handicap? Added distance? Winning next year's member-member? To me, forgetting for a moment how unsound such a business practice would be, a golfer's opinion of how successful lessons were is arbitrary. But I think there's more to this story. A scary kind of more.

The writer, despite categorically stating that he is desperate, still balked at paying a mere twenty-five dollars toward a better golf swing. After going back and forth in e-mails, I advised him that, if financial constraints were an issue that he should seek a less expensive route. Not only did he further state that finances weren't a concern, he never did order my golf DVD. Why not? Because of fear. Not fear of failure but an acute fear of being ripped-off, scammed or otherwise taken advantage of. Sadly, this is the world we live in now.

TIGER AND I ARE TWO VERY DIFFERENT PEOPLE - TRUTH IN ADVERTISING

TRUTH IN ADVERTISING
ORLANDO, Florida - It was a natural that a Cadillac Escalade figured prominently in last November's Tiger/Elin debacle. Hasn't Eldrick been trying to sell me a Buick since before his first million? It shows that people aren't necessarily what they pitch and that goes for the not-so-famous as well.

My friend Old Pete owns a liquor store and every Friday afternoon he hosts a beer tasting for the discriminating palates of Palm Beach County. In my opinion, the stuff he pours is downright n-a-s-t-y. His patrons describe the various brews as "woody" or "champagne-like." Old Pete smiles and pours, all the while subliminally wishing for last call so he can crack open a tall-boy Bud for himself. Pouring and pitching, pitching and smiling - it's just what people do.

As for myself, as you know, I bring you the Over The Top Golf® swing which is my patented method for hitting a golf ball consistently straight and a lot, lot longer. And the answer is "Oh Yes" to the question of whether I practice what I pitch. Well, I never actually practice in the literal sense of the word but you get the idea. There's a whole 'nother blog post lying therein. The sweet feeling of jumping out of my car, walking up to the first tee and smacking a long, low one. But I digress....

It's pretty obvious why a super rich person wouldn't be caught dead driving a Buick. No objections on my part to those people wanting the finer things in life. As for Old Pete, since his establishment caters to the popped-collar crowd, why not pretend to love rasberry beer for one afternoon a week? But me? What I teach on my golf instruction DVD is exactly what you'll see me doing on the golf course. Don't know whether Hank Haney actually uses that loopy doohickey in his own golf swing but I promise you that all the doohickeys I do in my lesson are the same doohickeys I do out here in the real world.

I am a Buick and I am a Bud
I'll never be rich and I'll never drink mud
I've made my point so I think I'll stop
You can play better golf swinging over the top

If you find your way to my blog or web site and don't purchase my golf instruction DVD I'd love to know why you didn't. Email me at contact@overthetopgolf.com because spending $25 to produce a 100% improvement in both your ball-striking and confidence seems to be a no-brainer or so I thought. Never had anyone ask for their money back. No reports of any major sprains or emergency room visits after doing the OTG swing. I'm expecting controversy about how the Over The Top Golf® swing is forcing them to lengthen courses but I expected that. Whether you have an outside in golf swing or not (I'm betting that you do), by employing OTG's five set-up changes your game will soar.

Smooth as a brand-new Buick and crisp as an iced-cold Bud.

TANGLED UP IN GOLF

TANGLED UP IN GOLF
Hack-Daddy needs some kind of tool or anything to stop coming over the top. He tried every damn thing he can  to cure his slice but nothing works. Close his stance, close his shoulders, stronger grip.... Nothing seems to get him to stop. This is something he can't correct. He tried to take it back straight back and drop inside but that doesn't even work.

Hack-Daddy's buddy, Shank-Daddy said coming over the top is something he even does and he can't fix it. The only thing for him that works is coming outside the line on the take away and re-routing coming down. It just makes his wrist sore so he needs something else as well.

From another helpful buddy, Daddy Duck-Hooker, "You are using your upper body too much to swing the club down in a hit motion. Your also sliding or moving your head over the top of the ball. I suspect that your coming out of your spine angle."

Duff-Daddy, the fourth in the group chimes in that one good way to start feeling the correct path is to think about swinging out  just right of second base. When you swing the club more out and around you on a longer arc it is near impossible to come over the top.

Just then Wise Old Pro-Daddy arrives to say that one good visual for sliding or covering the ball would be, once you have gotten to the top of your swing try to not let your left eye get in front of the ball on the way down. To correct coming out of your spine angle try swinging your club slowly while a chair is behind you. During the entire swing try to keep a cheek or a hip on the chair. Some of the others wonder what planet this guy came from.

Shank-Daddy agrees continuing that you can’t start down hard from the top but rather build speed on the way down. Work on your transition up top. Pause that sucker for a good 1 count (seems like 2 decades) and then let the lower body go. When that doesn't work, he adds, he thinks about cheese.

Big-Mama, their waitress, has a few words of wisdom. She tells them that if you tug on the string of a simple pendulum at just the right time you can inject kinetic energy and increase the amplitude of oscillation.

Duly impressed, they ask for more of her brilliant insight. She complies by saying that the same principle can be used to extract energy. When the phasing is such that it extracts energy, its sometimes called active vibration control or active vibration damping. The men weren't sure that a woman describing vibration was appropriate for the grill but allowed that she must have been indeed talking about golf instruction.

Shortly thereafter, none other than Yoda himself appears and mumbles the following: "When the club is releasing it is like a pendulum, the club is swinging about a point at the wrists. While we cannot shorten the length of the club shaft during the golf swing we can apply more centripetal acceleration than is needed to keep the club rotating. We can tug "UP" at just the right time thereby injecting kinetic energy to the club head. When done in the final stage of the downswing this is effectively the same thing as "reducing the hand path radius".

"Follow your ulna, boys" he said as he disappeared into the men's locker room.
